Creating Time for Fitness!

Welcome back!

fit-mamaFinding time for fitness is one struggle that all moms seem to have ““ there just never seem to be enough hours in the day to get a good workout.  On a recent interview with “The Mojo Coach” on The Mommy-Muse Is In: Empowering Your Journey Into Motherhood, Debi Silber and I talked about ways that overweight and overwhelmed mothers can get their “mojo” back through gradual lifestyle changes, including exercise.

In the course of juggling the responsibilitiesof parenthood, a household, (and oftentimes) a job outside the home, many moms find themselves out of shape and unable to find a way to work any type of fitness routine into their daily lives on a consistent basis. I have heard from many moms who would love to regain some of their former feelings of well-being through exercise, but simply cannot find the time.  Even though I wrote The Belly Dance Prescription: Shake Your Hips AND Depression, I am no stranger to this struggle!

Although finding the time for fitness is difficult for many moms, it”™s not as impossible as it may seem.  Don”™t look for these spaces that are going to magically appear for “finding time” for fitness. Be diligent about creating it, taking it in whatever way can work for you and your lifestyle.   I live near the mountains and we get quite a bit of snow.  When I was desperate to get out of the house with my two young children, including one who couldn’t walk much yet,  I ended up putting on a baby backpack and going out with snowshoes!

Some tips from on finding the “fit” you again:

·         Forget about finding time. You won”™t find it. You need to make it.

·         Set the intention to work out, that”™s a big part of it. As soon as you wake up, put on your exercise clothes. Make it a habit ““ then you won”™t have any excuse to fall back on to get moving for morning exercise ““ getting dressed is half the work.

·         If you belong to a fitness club, keep your gym bag packed and ready to go.

·         Buy a baby jogger and use it. Your little ones will love it and you”™ll get a great workout. Use a baby sling for younger babies ““ they”™ll love the closeness and warmth of being next to mom as she gets some exercise time in.

·         Put the baby in a playpen next to your home exercise equipment and she’ll have fun watching you work out.

·         Make exercise a priority.  After all, the healthier you are, the more energy you’ll have for everything else in your life, including your family!

·         Get older kids in on the fun ““ whether it be walking, jogging, or other activities, enjoy this time together getting fit.

·         Learn something new together with your child that incorporates physical activity ““ even belly dancing.  You”™ll have fun and get your needed exercise at the same time.
