Trish McGarrigle and Karen Kleiman are gifted therapists from The Postpartum Stress Center, an outstanding outpatient facility offering a full range of therapeutic services.   They come to us with highest recommendation from Karen Kleiman, founder of The Postpartum Stress Center and author of some of my favorite books on postpartum mood disorders.  Trish McGarrigle is a Registered Nurse, Certified Parenting Educator, and Associate Director at the Postpartum Stress Center.  She runs support groups, teaches workshops for professionals, and specializes in counseling women and families struggling with perinatal mood disorders.  Kate DeStefano-Torres is a nationally certified Licensed Professional Counselor, the newest member of the Postpartum Support Center who will be providing services at their New Jersey location on the Virtua Campus.

We had a wonderful time on the air, exploring questions like these:

·         Is it true that women are most susceptible to a mood disorder during the childbearing years?

·         What are the most common mental health issues that affect women and their families at this time and what is their prevalence?

·         What signs should a woman who is pregnant be alert to in reference to prenatal depression?

·         What are the signs of PPD?  How would a woman know?  What should her family and friends be looking for?

·         What is the time frame for developing postpartum depression?

·         Where should a woman with postpartum depression look for help?

·         How can she start this discussion with her doctor?  Do you have advice on what to ask/say?

·         What treatment options are available?

·         What advice would you give to women who favor homeopathic, natural remedies and alternative medicine?

·         How can concerned family members and friends help?
