Good Cover.inddThanks to everyone who has shared your funny mama stories with me in hopes of winning the official “If Mama Don’t Laugh, It Ain’t Funny” cap.  I will be accepting stories at Your Story Can Win through Monday, May 4th, before choosing the winner.

Now, if you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Lucy Adams, be prepared for a chuckle.  I love her new book, If Mama Don’t Laugh, It Ain’t Funny, and am delighted to bring some joy into your life with her “If Mama” blog tour:

 Reading Between the Lines

I taught myself Lamaze by reading a book.  That being a successful endeavor, I went on to teach myself mothering, also, by reading books.  I consulted the “experts” between the book covers on everything from how to keep socks on a newborn’s feet to curing baby blemishes to directions for mixing rice cereal.  But I quickly discovered that raising a child takes more than focused breathing and lasts a lot longer than labor.

(Focused breathing does have its place in parenting, however, right next to leaving the room and counting to ten.)

My own mama, exasperated with my endless citations of this expert and that expert, said to me, “They are not experts on your baby.  People have mothered for longer than they have pontificated about it in writing.  Put those books away and do it with your heart, your instincts, and the good common sense God gave you.”

Don’t tell her, but my mother was right.

Insanity Plea

The doctor announced, “It’s a girl.” I demanded that he check again. And, yet again.  After he convinced me that determining the gender of a newborn human isn’t as dicey as calling it for a kitten, I turned to my spouse and said, “She’s the cherry on top.”

Since then, she’s been the cherry who broke the bowl, not that she shattered me single-handedly. Three older brothers aided and abetted her.

I blame the bulk of my mental disorders on lack of privacy in the lavatory. For example, one morning, my daughter swung open the door to the loo, asking, “Why do you always look at magazines in the bathroom?”

”Because it’s the only quiet place I can find,” I replied.

”Is that why you sit on the toilet? To read?”

”Yes,” I said, flipping the pages, ignoring her in hopes that she would go away.

She didn’t. “Then why do you have your pants on your ankles?”
