Welcome back!
Excellent news on the postpartum political front has arrived! The “Mom’s Opportunity to Access Health, Education, Research, and Support for Postpartum Depression Act,” known as the Melanie Blocker Stokes MOTHERS Act, was passed on March 30th in the House of Representatives.
Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) reintroduced this Act in January to secure an increase federal commitment to combating postpartum depression. This new legislation would encourage Health and Human Services (HHS) to coordinate and continue research to expand the understanding of the causes of, and find treatments for, postpartum conditions. It would encourage a National Public Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and knowledge of postpartum depression and psychosis, require the Secretary of HHS to conduct a study on the benefits of screening for postpartum depression and postpartum depression. Finally, it would create a grant program to public or nonprofit private entities to deliver or enhance outpatient, inpatient and home-based health and support services, including case management and comprehensive treatment services for individuals with or at risk for postpartum conditions.
The Melanie Blocker Stokes MOTHERS Act is an essential piece of legislation that can increase awareness of critical postpartum issues and appropriate support services.
It may take a while to get through the Senate, so you have time to do this now: If you or your organization support this effort, add your name to the list. Email Susan Stone, head of the President’s Advisory Council for Postpartum Support International, at susanstonelcsw@aol.com. Give her your name, organizations name (if any), state, professional credentials (if any – not required – MD, LCSW, etc.), and include whether you are a concerned citizen, an advocate, a survivor, etc. A few short minutes of your time can mean so much!

I love the government is finally taking notice to something we women have been aching for someone to pay attention too. I love that there is now a way for women to get help without the fear of a doctor just dismissing her claims and leaving her still hurting. Thanks for letting the world know this is something worth talking about, and not just by those experiencing it, but by those in power to do something to treat it!
