Empower your life with up-to-date information through my RSS feed. Thank you!

myths-and-tales-banner1I have always loved listening to well crafted stories, so I am delighted to have discovered Tell Me a Story Audio CDs, featuring timeless folktales from around the world.  Purportedly for my children, the Tell Me a Story series is now a treasure in my collection.

Initially, I thought I would just pop in a CD for my kids to hear while I worked.  Several tales later, I’d gotten very little done, but had a deeply satisfied sensation of being nourished at a soul level.  My 7 year old sat with rapt attention the entire time, asking for more when the stories were over.  Upon hearing that I was writing a review for my blog, she insisted (about twenty times) that I tell you The Selkie Bride is her personal favorite.  I don’t think she’ll mind if I tell you that Searching for Fear gets my vote.  Listen all the way to the end, and you’ll see why!

Beautifully expressive voices, gorgeous music, and unexpected stories fill Tell Me a Story and Tell Me a Story 2: Animal Magic.   If, like me, you’ve become accustomed to standard story fare through put-the-kids-to-sleep story CDs, you’ll find these folktales are a breath of fresh air.  You’ll be swept away to exotic lands, captivated by spirited heroes and heroines on adventures with plenty of wisdom from around the world but never any “preachiness.”

While these audio tales are ideally suited for children 5 and up, even my 3 year old was intrigued.  She may not have understood the lengthy stories, but the talented voices and exquisite music captured her attention for longer than I expected.

I encourage you to visit www.mythsandtales.com to find out more about this series, including teaching ideas with classroom guides, exercises and folklore links.  Meanwhile, I’ll be enjoying the first two CDs and eagerly anticipating the upcoming Tell Me a Story 3: Women of Wonder!

You could also record your own voice reading your favorite children’s stories – that’d be a lovely tribute for them :)
