Eco-Warrior Luka

This is a first! My youngest-ever Mommy-Muse Guest Blogger, at the tender age of seven, has written our first green kids post :-)

MiniMonos Mama, Andrea Deely, was planning to write this, but as you’ll see, her son Luka delivered the story perfectly….

Hi, my name is Luca.  I’m seven years old.  I want to save the environment.

My son surprised me tonight with his words about global warming. I was under the assumption that Luca, being a tad behind with his reading and writing was not interested, or frankly, had much talent for writing stories. It’s apparently far more important to goof around with your buddies in class. So when I got out my laptop tonight to write a guest blog for Mommy-Muse, I naturally assumed his request to help me was because:

A. He was supposed to be reading his book beside me in bed, and he was fidgety. Annoyingly so.

B. It was 9 minutes until he had to go to his own bed to sleep and helping me might buy him a bit of extra time.

I humored him, thinking it would be worth delaying my blog if I could snag an amusing quote to use later. However I was completely unprepared for his story and half an hour later, after putting him to bed, I thought I’d share the words he dictated to me, unedited:

Hi, my name is Luca.  I’m seven years old.  I want to save the environment. I don’t like wasting water like my mum does sometimes when she’s brushing her teeth.

I don’t like wasting electricity so that means don’t keep the light on too long when you don’t need it. Don’t use the car too much. You should try to walk or bus.

I want to save the world so humans can live longer and the world won’t heat up by CO2. The world is supposed to end in about 40 billion years when the sun blows up because it will be dark on earth and we might fall into rivers or bang our heads and die.

If we don’t save the earth the countries could sink into the core earlier, and it might be too hard for animals to survive. Aren’t you so glad you’ve been born when the earth isn’t going to heat up too much? And aren’t you so sad for those people who will die when the earth heats up too much?

One day we could pick up wastes from the beaches and the motorway, because today I saw a floating plastic bag at the place where you get beer and wine with Dad on the way to our friends’ house. Plastic bags will kill seals. They mistake them as jellyfish and they will eat the plastic bags and the plastic bags will kill them. The wind will blow the plastic bags from people throwing them out the window, like Pak’n’Save bags.

I get paid to take the recycling down to the bins. We recycle to not put it in land cells (fills) because this especially causes the earth to heat up. (Looking at me incredulously); Why are we doing this? Who came up with the idea? Whoever did it wasn’t thinking well. Does he or she even care about the world?  The world could die earlier than it should so the best idea is to save the world, in my mind. Some people don’t agree with what I’m saying.

I think my mum has the best job because you are monkeys saving the world.  There’s a cool game called Monkey Flight.  My family all care for the environment. I am so glad I can save the world with my family.

At school I’m in the Eco-Warriors. Only 6 people in the class get picked.  I’m glad it’s me. We get to make cool stuff with leaves.

We should not pollute rivers and the sea or the beaches and the rainforests.  Some people are smashing the rainforests. It came home in a school notice. Do people even care about letting bags go out of their window? Cars let off smoke to heat up the world. Cows let off CO2 by farting. My Dad farts a lot (patting Dad, who is snoozing alongside us on the bed). You’re in my story, Dad.

Can you please help the environment? Also for nature and the animals, my two cats, maybe your cat or dog or animal you might have.  I reckon humans deserve a bit of punishment because of what we’ve done.  Are we thinking about other living things?

There are only 2 things I can say to that, Luca, as your mother:

  1. Our generation is being punished for our carelessness when our beautiful children have to be concerned, as young as 7 years old, about saving the earth.
  2. My Darling, I’m not worried about your story-writing any more.

Thank you, Luca, for your insights and leadership in the effort to save our planet. It is kids like you who will be able to do the most for our Earth. I see many kids in the work I do who are just like you, wanting to save the environment.

Keep speaking up and being a voice for change. This is one of the most important parts of being the Eco-Warrior that you are. Thanks for your guest blog post and keep up the good work. I agree with your mother, I’m not worried about your writing abilities either.
