I am pleased to introduce you to twitter friend @MiniMonos, whose virtual world is making a  real-world difference!

For mother-of-two Melissa Clark-Reynolds, snorkelling with her 8 year-old daughter changed her life and put her on the pathway to creating MiniMonos, a safe virtual world for good green kids.

The inspiration for MiniMonos came while Melissa was encouraging her daughter Grace to overcome her fear of putting her face underwater so she could see turtles. Melissa wondered how much longer those turtles could withstand increasing ocean temperatures. She became terrified by the thought that one day Grace would have to tell her children, “There used to be turtles.”

Seeing Al Gore’s movie The Inconvenient Truth was also another turning point for Melissa. As the movie came to an end, she turned to her husband with tears running down her face and declared that she was going to contact Al Gore and do something about saving the Earth. Her husband, suitably alarmed, suggested she have a cup of tea to calm down, but she declined politely and set about trying to get noticed by Gore. Although she knew absolutely nothing about how to start, she focused on her task with the persistence of a three-year-old after a toy. Melissa finally managed to connect with and make an impact on Gore’s organisation The Climate Project and went to Australia to be personally trained by Gore. As a result of this training, Melissa now gives The Inconvenient Truth presentations throughout her home country, New Zealand.

MiniMonos allows Melissa to align her deep passion for the environment with her professional career. The virtual world helps children to understand that everything is interconnected, to realize the importance of their own actions on the environment and to make positive changes in the real world. MiniMonos is designed to be fun, not ‘preachy’, and free of the constant pressure to buy stuff found in other online offerings for children.
MiniMonos is being created hand-in-hand with the community of wonderful kids and parents who have joined up. Members can have fun exploring MiniMonos Island, and comment on what they like and don’t like about new developments as they’re released.

Ocean Monkey

Won’t you join me and become part of this community?  By simply logging on to MiniMonos, playing on the island (it’s free) and telling them in a few words what you think, you can give a child in India clean water for a month. You will become part of a group of parents committed to a fun, sustainable and safe environment for kids.

On Melissa’s behalf, thanks for everything you do — for your children and for the planet — and hope to see you on MiniMonos island!
