Honoring Our Youth: Young Einsteins to March in First Harlem Science Parade

by mmuse on September 25, 2009

Welcome back!

Harlem Children SocietyHave you heard about the Harlem Children Society?  The HCS identifies the best students in 7th through 12th grade from the poorest neighborhoods, matches them with professionals in science, technology, engineering and math, research stipends, helps with SAT preparation and college applications, and supports them through college!  Founded by Dr. Sat Bhattacharya in 2001 with just three students, HCS now has over 330 students (800 globally) from 75 schools in New York alone.  See the wonderful work that’s going on at www.harlemchildrensociety.org!

Tomorrow, September 26th, braniacs in solar panels, double-helix headdresses and other geek-chic couture will turn Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. into the world’s largest scientific catwalk as lab-coat clad Einsteins and Curies from 70 New York middle and high schools, and over 35 colleges carry banners showcasing their research at The Harlem Children Society’s First Harlem Science Parade, Saturday, September 26, 2009, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., beginning at 112th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., marching north to 125th Street.

The parade leads to HCS’ Sixth Annual Science Fair and Festival, noon to  5 p.m., the NYS Office Building Plaza, 125th Street (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., where robots, rockets, chemistry experiments, and posters make science accessible to communities that are under-represented in scientific fields. Young scientists will answer questions about their research against a background of music and performances.  A giant screen will simulcast—in real time—HCS festivities in Washington D.C.; New Orleans; on a Hopi Reservation in Arizona, and in Mexico, Kenya, New Zealand and Ethiopia.

For my readers in New York, this is a must see.  And for those of us who can’t be there in person, we can be there in spirit to support these amazing kids and the adults who are committed to making a difference in their lives!
